Scale RC Helicopters

The vast majority of helicopter models available are scale RC helicopters. This means that the helicopter is exactly like a real, full sized helicopter except that it is smaller. Many individuals like to build their own scale RC helicopters as you only need a few things form the hardware store. Additionally there are kits you can use or you can buy pre-built models from hobby stores.

The less expensive models tend to run on electric or batteries. These types of model helicopters are nice, as they do not produce smoke or are overly loud as compared to a gas powered model helicopter. The simpler models can be used to learn how to fly a helicopter though the more intricate models may require flying experience before use.

The electric models do not have an engine so flight is much more stable. If you would like to get some practice flying a model helicopter it is recommended that you use a flight simulator. It can be quite fun to fly your scale RC helicopter on an actual airfield though you will have to purchase AMA insurance. It is recommended that you only fly in good weather as this will minimize any damage to your helicopter and you will have less of a chance of crashes due to weather.

Learning to fly a helicopter can be challenging, as you have to control several different things at once. Landing must be done at the correct speed or you run the chance of entering into your own down wash. Additionally there are things you can do to minimize damage if your should crash.

If you want to purchase a scale RC helicopter that is flight ready then look for one with RTF, or ready to fly on the box. You just need to take it out of the box, read the instructions and you are ready to go. Other models may require some assemble or additional work to be flight ready.
